Prosodic phenomena in simultaneous interpreting

2005

This paper reports on an empirical study on prosody in English-German simultaneous interpreting. It discusses prosody with particular reference to its tonal, durational and dynamic features, such as intonation, pauses, rhythm and accent, as well as its main functions, i.e. structure and prominence. Following a review of previous studies on the topic, a conceptual approach for the analysis of prosody in terms of structure and prominence is developed and subsequently applied to an authentic corpus of professional simultaneous interpretation consisting of three German versions of a 72-minute English source text. Prosodic patterns in the corpus are analyzed by means of a computer-aided method u…

English translation of the Quran by women: the challenges of “gender balance” in and through language

2011

This paper aims to explore and discuss how women translators of the Quran have dealt with the patriarchal linguistic elements in the source text by focusing on two main challenges of translation. First the problem of gender agreement differences between the target and the source language. Because Arabic is highly gendered and English is not, many feminine nouns, pronouns and verbs become invisible in English and as result the “gender balance” created in original could be lost in the translation. The second challenge they face lies in the use of masculine nouns and pronouns in the generic sense, which as many feminists argued assumes generic human to be male and excludes the “human woman.” T…

FrameNet CNL: A Knowledge Representation and Information Extraction Language

2014

The paper presents a FrameNet-based information extraction and knowledge representation framework, called FrameNet-CNL. The framework is used on natural language documents and represents the extracted knowledge in a tailor-made Frame-ontology from which unambiguous FrameNet-CNL paraphrase text can be generated automatically in multiple languages. This approach brings together the fields of information extraction and CNL, because a source text can be considered belonging to FrameNet-CNL, if information extraction parser produces the correct knowledge representation as a result. We describe a state-of-the-art information extraction parser used by a national news agency and speculate that Fram…

Off-Modern Hybridity in TV Theatre: Theatrical, Cinematic and Media Temporalities in Rupert Goold’s Macbeth (BBC - Illuminations Media, 2010)

2021

Rupert Goold’s screen production of Macbeth – firstly, staged in 2007 and, later, filmed in 2010 – has been studied as an example of the stage-to-screen hybrid corpus of Shakespearean audio-visual adaptations. Thus, much of the critical emphasis on the production has been placed on its filmic qualities. Particularly, the genre film conventions deployed across the film has summoned the attention of Shakespeare on screen scholars and it has been the creators’ intentions to precisely point at Goold’s filmic intertextual repertoire. Given the recent increasing attention to the multiple media and languages employed in stage-to-screen hybrid Shakespearean adaptations and other exchanges between t…

Retrospection in interpreting and translation: explaining the process?

2014

Retrospection is one of the few research methods equally suitable for studying the processes involved in both translation and interpreting. At the first workshop on research methods in process-oriented research (Graz 2009), we presented the results of a pilot study of retrospection as a research method, published as Englund Dimitrova & Tiselius (2009). The study involved data from two groups (15 years of professional experience vs. no professional experience), each with 3+3 subjects (interpreter subjects vs. translator subjects, all with Swedish as their L1). The source text was a 10-minute plenary speech in English from the European Parliament, interpreted simultaneously into Swedish. …

‘Monitoring’ in translation

2019

Abstract We assume that visual feedback from the written trace during translation plays an important role in monitoring the emerging translation. In this study, 44 participants translated with and without visual feedback from the target text (TT). Numerous measures were used to explore the differences between the texts that were created in the two conditions and the characteristics of the task performance in the two conditions. The impact of ST-TT semantic and syntactic relationships showed that there were differences on two of three behavioural measures across conditions. In the comparison of features of the translation process, findings show that ST reading times were longer without visua…

Understanding Estonian phraseological units on the basis of Finnish : contributing and misleading factors

2020

Vironkielistä tekstiä lukevien suomalaisten on havaittu hyödyntävän monenlaisia strategioita selvittääkseen sukukielen sanojen merkityksiä. Yksi niistä on pohjustaminen (priming). Kun kyseessä on fraseologinen yksikkö, yksi osa (prime) pohjustaa toisen osan eli kohdesanan (targetin) esiintymistä, mikäli prime on tunnistettavissa äidinkielen perusteella. Tässä artikkelissa kuvaamme muutamia erityistilanteita. Miten pohjustimen ja kohdesanan välinen etäisyys tai teemanvaihdos vaikuttavat ’petollisen ystävän’ ymmärtämiseen? Lisäksi tutkimme sitä, miten ahdasrajainen semanttinen kategoria ohjaa siitä puuttuvan jäsenen merkityksen löytämistä ja millaisia perusteita käännösratkaisuille on löydett…

DISCOURSE INTERFERENCE IN TRANSLATION

2001

This article focuses on three major factors that may enhance the degree of hybridity of target texts: first, the ideological background, i.e., the prestige accorded to the source culture in relation to the target culture; second, translator's competence, i.e., the translator's ability to rationalise translation process and choose an adequate translation strategy; third, the skopos of translation, i.e., hybrid features may be deliberately imposed upon the translation to enable the text to serve a given function. Each of these factors is analysed within a framework of a concrete text. The conclusion of this analysis is that due to the functionalist approach, the concept of translation has bec…

Comparing Translation and Post-editing: An Annotation Schema for Activity Units

2016

The current chapter introduces an annotation schema of TPR data that categorises post-editing behaviour into five different classes and compares general-language and domain-specific English-to-German translation and post-editing with respect to production times, key-logging (text production activity and text elimination activity) and eye-tracking data (total reading times on source text and on target text). The results support the hypothesis that post-editing is faster than translation from scratch for both domain-specific and non-domain-specific text types. When key-logging and eye-tracking data are taken into consideration, domain-specific texts require more effort when translating from s…
